Process and History
VIA Dance Collaborative's members successfully facilitate a forum in which choreography, performance, and design are fully explored and realized. Recently noted as "rich in elegant, total design and performance" by Eva YaaAsantewaa (Infinate Body Blog), the work for which we have received praise stems from attention to each member's individual aesthetic sense and a sincere reverence for a collective creative process. As a collaborative, we share not only the responsibilities of dancing and choreographing, but also the nuts and bolts of running a company. Throughout the company's six full New York City seasons, educational residencies, and dozens of shared performances, the company has worked hard to build meaningful relationships with its audiences through interactive projects and performances. Together, the company has created over 20 new dances spearheaded by eight choreographers and numerous collaborators. Two of them, The Dream Project: Lullaby in Surrealism and The Seasons Project were full-scale, interactive community projects.
Called “a group of brainy, funny modern-dance choreographers" by The New York Times, VIA’s work has been presented over 30 times in and out of New York City at venues including Dance New Amsterdam, Joyce SoHo, Dixon Place, and at Performática: an International Forum on Contemporary Dance and Movement Arts in Puebla, Mexico, The company has twice performed an evening-length work at Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, appeared at the East Street Theatre in Hadley, Massachusetts, and has performed for two consecutive years at the Dance Under the Stars Festival in Palm Desert, California. They have also conducted unique residencies in partnership with North Carolina School of the Arts, Mt. Tremper Arts, Chenango Forks Schools, St. Johns University, and twice at the State University of New York at Fredonia. VIA’s SUNY Fredonia residency was profiled in the September 2005 issue of Dance Spirit magazine.
